IRSE L&SE - Introduction of new technology ( SMARTI/O & MCS-I) in Southern

In October 2024 we reached a significant milestone in Southern as Victoria phase 4 commissioned with two brand new products (SMART I/O and MCS-I). This presentation is to bring you along that journey of why new technology is so important to the railway, the benefits of what we have brought in, the challenges of implementing new technology on our infrastructure and the lessons from delivering a project alongside a product.

Presenters
Jonathan Good, BEng (Hons) MSc CEng MIET – Senior Project Engineer Signalling, Southern Region. Designated Project Engineer for Victoria Phase 4 with over 15 years of railway engineering experience, having begun his career as an apprentice and gaining valuable hands-on expertise in maintenance and operations before transitioning into major infrastructure projects.

Ben Moyse, BEng (Hons) IEng MIET – Principal Engineer Signalling, Southern Region. Technical lead for MCS-I for Network Rail having supported its development as a product and then its deployment UK wide. Joined Network Rail as a Signalling Engineering Graduate before moving into design and then later projects acting as a DPE for many multidiscipline projects.
