Piccadilly Interim Control Upgrade project
23 Sep 2021 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Further information: London & South East Section

The Piccadilly Interim Control Upgrade (PICU) project is using modern digital technology to provide signal control along the Piccadilly line and to deliver a new Control Centre in South Kensington. The project’s aim was to enable Piccadilly line Service Control and Regulation to move out of the decrepit Earl’s Court building, to remove the unreliability of the legacy hard-wired site interfaces and to improve train regulation on the Piccadilly line by providing a state-of-the art control interface. At the same time PICU will improve the provision of line performance data to external Passenger Information, TrackerNet and Management Information systems, and enable proper integration of the 4LM control system along the shared sub-surface section of line. The core TfL developed technology inside PICU is now evolving into the “Modular Train Regulation And Control” (mTRAC) system, and will form a key part of the Bakerloo Control Upgrade Project (BCUP).

The PICU system is currently controlling the whole Piccadilly Line, including the shared District/Piccadilly sections, from the new Control Room. The final geographic commissioning was in September 2019.

Adam Ladds, a C&I Engineer working as PICU Project Engineer, is currently leading the Control & Information team at Stratford, and has worked for TfL for 8 years, two of those with the Graduate Scheme. As employee number 2 for Citymapper, he has seen many sides of transport control and information systems. Adam has worked with the PICU project for a number of years, from the first site cabinet install to the current operations in the control room. He has extensive experience with most of the signalling systems in use on the network, and is a big proponent of in-house development and projects.

This will be an on-line presentation using gotoMeeting.
