Scottish Section Evening Lecture

Speaker: Carole Markou, Signalling Review & Risk Engineer, Network Rail

Topic: Have the Lessons Been Learned? Managing Scotland'd SPAD Risk After Ladbroke Grove

The tragic Ladbroke Grove rail crash in 1999 was a defining moment for the UK rail industry. It led to major reforms in how the industry manages the risk of Signals Passed at Danger (SPADs).

In this evening lecture, Carole Markou from Network Rail will explore:

  • What happened at Ladbroke Grove and why it had such far-reaching consequences.

  • The changes and safety improvements that were introduced following the public inquiry.

  • Whether the lessons of this incident have truly been learned.

  • How SPAD risk is specifically managed today on the Scottish rail network.

Join us to gain insight into how past events continue to shape current safety culture and engineering practice across the rail industry.
